If you know me, you know I just love breakfast and brunch, so I was super excited to try out breakfast at Lakaz Maman in Southampton. Lakaz Maman, meaning ‘Mum’s House’ does certainly ring true to it’s laid-back and friendly atmosphere. The interiors are vibrant, and it just makes you feel happy being there!

The restaurant is owned by Shelina Permaloo, who won MasterChef UK in 2012. It was actually the last year I watched it (I discovered MasterChef Australia the same year, and now I can’t go back), however I was delighted she won, not only for her gorgeous food, but with these types of shows, the likability factor plays a part too. And, I was not disappointed when I met her! Shelina is warm and so lovely, and her passion and knowledge for food shines through.

Throughout the Mauritian street-food menu, there’s some really good vegetarian options, and the breakfast menu was no different. To drink I tried a Panakon, which is a delicious Mauritian drink with lemon and a perfectly subtle flavour of tamarind. To eat, I had poached eggs (in my mind, only wizards can poach eggs, it’s like witchcraft. How do you do it? HOW DO YOU DO IT?), which were placed in spicy tomato sauce, which had bags of flavour, and all served with a warm roti to soak up the sauce.

I can’t wait to go back and try stuff from the main menu, there’s some aubergine baijas with my name on it.
